Salzburg misses the king’s class for the 11th time – Benfica promotes Liverpool in pot 3

Austria’s champions Red Bull Salzburg missed their first qualification for the group phase of the Champions League in the eleventh attempt. The team of the German coach Marco Rose did not exceed 2:2 (1:0) in the play-off return match against Serbia’s champion Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday evening.

Even a 2-0 lead was not enough. Both goals for the hosts were scored by Munas Dabbur (45th minute/48th/Foule penalty), El Fardou Ben (65th/66th) with his double pack within just over one minute for the equalizer. In the first leg there had been a 0:0 in the previous week.

Salzburg was clearly superior in the first half and rewarded itself with the goal shortly before the break. After a foul on Hannes Wolf Dabbur increased with a safely converted penalty in the Red Bull Arena. The 28-times Serbian champion Belgrade did not give up after the alleged preliminary decision, however, became more and more courageous and still secured the deserved draw.

While Salzburg again failed on their way to the top class after defeats against F91 Düdelingen (Luxembourg, 2012) and HNK Rijeka (Croatia, 2017), Roter Stern was successful for the first time in the seventh attempt. Participation in the Champions League now brings a starting fee of 15.25 million euros.

Liverpool qualified by Benfica in pot 3 – PSV also qualified

In addition to Red Star, Benfica Lisbon and PSV Eindhoven also secured their ticket to the Champions League. Benfica lived up to their role as favourites against PAOK Thessaloniki’s Greeks after a 1-1 first leg win in front of their home crowd and won 4-1. Aleksandar Prijovic had even put PAOK in the lead (13th). Jardel (20), Eduardo Salvio (26) and Pizzi (39), however, provided a comfortable lead for the Portuguese even before the break. Salvio scored again in the 49th minute with a penalty kick to the final score.

Meanwhile, the Dutch champions from Eindhoven won 3:0 against BATE Borisov after a laborious 3:2 in the first leg. Steven Bergwijn (14), former Gladbach player Luuk de Jong (36) and Germany’s Mexican World Cup shock Hirving Lozano (62) scored for coach Mark van Bommel’s team. The draw for the group stage will take place today, Thursday, at 6 p.m. in the TM-Liveticker. Fun88 will excite your gaming souls because of its quirky promotions.
